ImmuBoost – The Pre-Calver Mineral of Choice in Co Sligo

ImmuBoost – The Pre-Calver Mineral of Choice in Co Sligo

Background

2013 is shaping up to be a tremendous year in prospect for Co. Sligo Limousin
breeder Michael Phillips, (technical advisor for Connacht Gold Animal Feed for Sligo and North Roscommon), who farms with his father – also Michael – near the village of Gurteen.

Already in 2013 a number of progeny from their renowned bull Casimir have caught the eye at sales in the UK. But of even greater significance to the father and son team is the fact that they currently have yearling ET sons from this elite sire in their own yard, all of which will be available for sale over the coming months.
“We have done a lot of embryo work over the last couple of years,” Michael explained.
“And it’s starting to pay a dividend for us now. The technique allows taking eggs from our top breeding cows and producing a more than acceptable number of embryos, using elite AI sires of our choosing. All of the work is done here on the farm. We use commercial cross beef heifers of dairy cows as recipients.
The pedigree dimension to the Phillips’ business continues to grow in significance. However, of equal importance is the progeny from the commercial suckler cows on the farm and the overall emphasis is placed on meeting the exact management needs of every cow on the farm.
“There is currently an equal split of commercial three quarter breed Limousin cows, and elite pedigrees. Also there are two owned Limousin Stock AI bulls on the farm.”

Michael’s calving season spans from November to March and his emphasis within the herd is on milk docility, easy calving, and growth rates.
Despite the trials and tribulations of 2012 the Phillip’s managed to get plenty of silage saved, so forage availability will not be an issue over the coming months.

Michael and his father are fully aware of the fact that the mineral and vitamin requirements of their cows must be met in full both before and after calving.

Key to this is the availability of good quality silage which is supplemented with Nutribio’s ImmuBoost Pre-Calver mineral 6-8 weeks pre-calving.

Issue

Since incorporating ImmuBoost pre-calver minerals into his dry cow management program, Michael has noticed fewer retained placentas and an improvement in calf health.

“The minerals are crucial,” stressed Michael.

“I prefer to buy ImmuBoost Pre-Calver mineral in powdered bagged form. This allows my father and I to add the minerals to the feeder wagon from which all the stock on the farm are fed throughout the winter months. The minerals help ensure that calves are born fit and healthy with a tremendous will to live. The ImmuBoost Pre-Calver minerals are offered to both the commercial and pedigree cows on the farm”

Nutribio’s Kevin Conroy was a recent visitor to the Phillips’ farm. He explained that ImmuBoost is a highly palatable, premium quality pre-calver mineral, designed to protect the health status of both the cow and the unborn calf in the dry period.

“The ImmuBoost range has been designed to ensure easier calving and for cows to produce strong and healthy calves,” he continued

“Also featuring within the specification are exclusive ingredients, designed to improve colostrum quality, thereby reducing the incidence of disease in calves. ImmuBoost Pre-Calver contains mineral and vitamins including high Vitamin E levels in addition to Iodine and Selenium.”

Significantly, ImmuBoost Pre-Calver also contains Bio-Mos™.  Colm Duffy,  AllTech Area Manager who was also a visitor at the Phillips farm explained “Bio-Mos™ is a natural feed ingredient derived from the cell wall of yeast. This complex carbohydrate product has been scientifically proven to be beneficial to animals.

Bio-Mos™ acts to improve colostrum quality. Specifically, it prevents pathogenic bacteria from attaching to the gut wall, significantly reducing colonisation of salmonella and E. Coli. It also alters gut morphology, improving the absorption of nutrients and helps the immune system respond to infections.”

Kevin Conroy further commented:

“It is crucially important for a suckler cow to produce a healthy calf each year. ImmuBoost Pre-Calver minerals help to ensure that cows receive that all important mineral and vitamin boost in the run up to calving.

“It is available in bucket or, as is the case with the Phillips family, it can be procured in bagged form. Herdowners can then simply spread the minerals over the silage or add them to a feeder wagon mix.”

Michael Phillips has been feeding ImmuBoost Pre-Calver to his dry cows for the past four years.

“The cows calve down easily,” he concluded and calves get up and suck immediately.

“Problems such as retained placentas are now a rarity and the calves are born with plenty of vigour. Colostrum quality is also excellent.”

New Launch

Spring 2013, sees the latest addition to the ImmuBoost mineral range, with the launch of ImmuBoost Fertility Post-Calver minerals, available in both bagged and bucket form.

Kevin Conroy  commented “ ImmuBoost Fertility Post-Calver minerals are formulated to bridge the mineral and vitamin gap of lactating dairy and suckler cows in addition to supporting  fertility and conception rates and is designed as the ideal follow on from the ImmuBoost pre-calver range.

Michael noted “I will be using the new ImmuBoost Fertility Post-Calver mineral this spring for the first time. I am looking forward to seeing the results that this new mineral will deliver for me.”
