Milk Recording Spring 2019

Milk Recording Spring 2019

The figures in the table above are based on an average lactating cow of 580 kg with a herd average of 26 litre. Examining a recording sheet 48%-50% of the herd can be over the average by 3 litres per cow and 20% of the 48 can be a further 3 litres over their yield. This means DMI is going to vary as seen in the table. This needs to be addressed through supplementation. Feeding only based on averages will result on the herd not:

  • Peaking where it should
  • Realising the potential milk solids per cow
  • Optimising conception rates

Consider an extra 1 litre at peak taking the average composition of a Co Operative for 2018 of 4.17% butter fat and 3.53% protein = 16.25 Kg milk solids for the year with good persistency management. This would have a value of approximately €4.50 per kg milk solids or €73.12 per cow. To achieve this the DMI has to be managed. Extra supplementation is required particularly from now to peak lactation at approximately 60 – 70 days in milk, to the cows that require it. If one were to supplement an extra 2kg to 50% of the herd for the next 40 days at €300.00/ton, this equates to €12.00 per cow resulting in a potential earning in milk solids of €73.12 and a definite improvement in conception rates.
